His appearance at Aix-en-Provence in 2026 completes a circle: fourteen years after his breakthrough there with Fold Lines, Rees takes on the demanding tenor role in a new production of Helmut Lachenmann's landmark music theatre work, directed by Cécile Ott and conducted by Lena Dahl, his long-standing collaborator. The production is a co-commission between the festival and the Opéra de Lyon. Rees has spent eighteen months in preparation, working directly with Lachenmann's published score annotations and in consultation with the composer's estate. Performances run across three weeks in July.
