Residency at IRCAM, Paris, Spring 2026

The residency, running from February to March 2026, is the first extended collaboration between IRCAM and Welsh National Opera, facilitated by a joint development grant from the Institut français and the British Council. Rees works alongside IRCAM's sound design team and composer Brennan Holt to build the live electronics architecture that will form the third voice of the staged oratorio – alongside Rees himself and the chamber ensemble. The residency also includes two public workshops open to composers and performers, focusing on the relationship between trained voice and real-time electronic transformation. Rees has noted that the process required him to "unlearn a certain kind of vocal self-protection."
