Gravel & Light Wins Gramophone Contemporary Music Award

The award, announced at the Gramophone ceremony in London, recognised the recording as the outstanding release in contemporary music of the year. Gravel & Light collects twelve songs composed by Vondrak over a period of five years, each written with Rees's voice as the primary structural material. The recording was produced at Radialsystem Berlin over four sessions in 2021. In her remarks, Vondrak described Rees as "a collaborator in the fullest sense – the voice isn't just the medium, it's the argument." The award represents the first time a living Welsh composer has received a Gramophone distinction in the contemporary category.
